Extraction is the last option, not the first. Where a tooth is unrestorable — split, severely decayed, or with advanced bone loss — removing it relieves the problem and protects the teeth around it.
The conversation about what replaces the tooth is best had before the extraction, not after, because some options (particularly implants) are affected by how the socket is managed on the day.
